Gut Microbiota, Health and Diet: How to move from Correlations to Causality and Mechanistic Understanding?

Erwin Zoetendal, Wageningen University, The Netherlands

Dr. Zoetendal will explore approaches how to establish causality and mechanistic understanding in gut microbiota research, moving beyond correlations between diet, microbiome, and health. With examples from his own research and those of others, he will examine how intervention studies focusing on the microbiome can help determining causality from cross-sectional observations. Moreover, he will demonstrate how in vitro studies with fecal microbiomes or synthetic communities can lead to understanding mechanisms underlying in vivo observations or lead to new hypotheses.
