Microbiota-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Bridging Mother and Fetus

Justus Reunanen

The ISM is pleased to welcome Dr. Justus Reunanen, University of Oulu, Finland to Targeting Microbiota 2024 this October.

Topic: Microbiota-Derived Extracellular Vesicles: Bridging Mother and Fetus.

Presentation Summary

Dr. Runanen will discuss his latest research on bacterial extracellular vesicles during healthy pregnancies. His study found these vesicles in amniotic fluid, similar to those from the maternal gut microbiota, and demonstrated that they can cross biological barriers to reach the fetus. This discovery highlights a new form of communication between the maternal microbiota and the fetus, which may play a role in preparing the fetal immune system for gut colonization after birth.
