Oral Microbiota: A Player in Human Systematic Diseases

News Release,International Society of Microbiota, France - March 8, 2022

Oral bacteria play an important role in the status of dental caries and periodontal diseases. Oral microbiota and host cooperate and determine the immunity and metabolism statuses through their 2 way communication along the oral cavity and the systemic organs.

The oral cavity's micro-environment possesses various microbial compositions and is regulated by complex signaling, hosts, and external environmental factors. These processes may affect or reflect human health because certain health states seem to be related to the composition of oral bacteria, and the destruction of the microbial community is related to systemic diseases.

Oral Microbiota: A Player in Human Systematic Diseases

Schematic of the oral microbiota in human systematic diseases.

In this review, Peng et. al discussed emerging evidence of complex and important connections between the oral microbes and multiple human systemic diseases, and the possible contribution of the oral microorganisms to systemic diseases. They dicussed the relationship between oral microbiota and digestive system diseases, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, alzheimer's disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthiritis. They also reviewed the link between oral microbes and preterm birth.

They concluded that the continuous development of metagenomics technology and high-throughput sequencing technology has greatly expanded human understanding of the relationship between the oral microbiome and systemic diseases. Oral microbiology has changed from studying the pathogenicity of individual bacteria to the relationship between oral microecological balance and systemic diseases.

However, the study of the oral microbiome is still in its infancy. Understanding the specific mechanisms that maintain and regulate oral microecological balance is of great significance to the prevention and treatment of oral diseases and even human systemic diseases.

Targeting Microbiota 2022 will boost your knowledge on the link between microbiota and systemic diseases. Professionals like  Dr. Bertrand Routy and Dr. Fermin I. Milagro will introduce you to the implication of gut microbiota in different diseases.
